Modern aluminium glazing for a rural barn in Gloucestershire

Details

Set within rolling countryside and open meadow planting

Overview

Expansive glazing positioned to frame views across the surrounding landscape

Located in Ashmead Green, Cam, Gloucestershire, Ashmead Barn is a contemporary rural home set within rolling countryside and open meadow planting. The building takes the form of a dark-clad barn structure with clean rooflines, deep recessed openings and expansive glazing positioned to frame views across the surrounding landscape. The restrained material palette allows the architecture to sit quietly within its setting, while the large-format glazing introduces natural light deep into the interior spaces and strengthens the connection between the house and the countryside.

The project combines robust architectural forms with carefully considered glazing solutions that support both the aesthetic ambition of the design and the practical requirements of modern living. Across the scheme, Fluid Glass supplied a combination of sliding doors, fixed aluminium windows and a glazed pivot entrance door system.

Fluid Sliding Doors

Slim sightlines and dark aluminium finishes integrating naturally with the external cladding

The Fluid Sliding Door systems were used throughout the property to create large uninterrupted glazed openings and maintain a strong visual connection to the landscape.

Within the master bedroom at first floor level, a large sliding door arrangement with an integrated balustrade provides expansive views across the Gloucestershire countryside while maintaining a minimal external appearance. The slim aluminium framing allows the glazing to become the dominant element, maximising daylight and reinforcing the calm, open character of the interior spaces.

At ground floor level, the sliding systems were also incorporated within the downstairs corner office. Positioned on two adjoining elevations, the arrangement uses one fixed and one sliding panel on each side to create dual aspect views and direct access to the outside. The configuration allows the office space to feel open and connected to the landscape throughout the day, while the large glazed openings introduce consistent natural light from multiple directions.

The sliding door systems complement the simple barn form of the architecture, with slim sightlines and dark aluminium finishes integrating naturally with the external cladding.

Fluid Windows

Support the contemporary appearance of the building

Fludesign aluminium fixed casement windows were used throughout the project as the Fluid Window system, providing a consistent architectural language across the façade.

The fixed glazing elements were carefully positioned to frame views and balance the proportions of the barn structure. Large-format glazing to the upper gable elevation creates a strong focal point to the front of the building, while narrower vertical windows introduce rhythm and contrast along the darker cladding elevations.

The slim aluminium profiles support the contemporary appearance of the building without distracting from the simplicity of the architectural form. Internally, the windows maximise daylight penetration and help create bright, open living spaces despite the dark external palette.

Fluid Pivot Door

Integrates seamlessly into the wider architectural composition

The main entrance to the property features a Fluid Pivot Door system formed using a glazed aluminium hinged door arrangement with sidelights.

Positioned centrally within a recessed entrance area, the large glazed entrance door creates a welcoming arrival point while maintaining the clean, minimal appearance of the exterior. The additional sidelights increase the amount of natural light entering the entrance space and enhance the scale of the opening.

Finished in dark aluminium to match the surrounding glazing systems and cladding, the entrance door integrates seamlessly into the wider architectural composition while providing a strong focal point to the front elevation.

Outcome

Simplicity, proportion and performance

Ashmead Barn demonstrates how contemporary glazing systems can support modern rural architecture through simplicity, proportion and performance. The combination of large sliding doors, minimal aluminium windows and a glazed entrance door allows the building to remain visually restrained while creating light-filled interior spaces strongly connected to the landscape.

The completed project achieves a careful balance between contemporary detailing and agricultural-inspired form, with the glazing systems playing a central role in defining the character of the home and enhancing the experience of its countryside setting in Ashmead Green, Cam, Gloucestershire.
