Overview

Frameless structural glazing

Garden Lodge is an elegant reimagining of an Edwardian home, where heritage architecture is extended through a series of contemporary garden pavilions. Designed by Coffey Architects, the project brings together past and present in a carefully balanced composition that enhances everyday living while preserving the character and dignity of the original Lodge.

The extension respects the massing and proportions of the Edwardian structure, offering a low maintenance and highly considered addition that strengthens the connection between house and garden. Rather than a single dominant form, the new build is arranged as three distinct volumes, creating a calm architectural dialogue that feels both refined and understated.

Two of the volumes accommodate the main living spaces including the kitchen, dining, and living areas, while a third detached pavilion is discreetly positioned to the side of the garden and serves as a private gym. This fragmented approach ensures the extension integrates naturally with its surroundings without overpowering the original home.

Fluid Skylight

A contemporary twist on Edwardian grace

Light was treated as a core design material throughout the project. Each pitched roof within the new pavilions is crowned with sleek, frameless skylights that draw daylight deep into the interior spaces, enhancing the sense of openness and calm.

The skylights are carefully detailed to remain visually discreet from street level, ensuring the Edwardian facade retains its composed and dignified appearance. Internally, they create bright, airy rooms that shift in character throughout the day as natural light moves across the spaces.

The most ambitious element was the installation of one of the largest residential skylights in the United Kingdom. Measuring an impressive 5953mm x 2511mm and weighing over 990kg, the skylight demanded exceptional precision in both engineering and installation. Delivering and positioning an element of this scale required meticulous planning and technical expertise, pushing the boundaries of what is typically achievable in a residential setting.

Outcome

Crowned by daylight

Garden Lodge stands as a clear expression of how contemporary architecture can coexist respectfully with historic homes. The project delivers a light filled, modern living environment while maintaining a sensitive relationship with the original Edwardian structure and the surrounding garden.

This installation reflects our commitment to ambitious architectural projects and our enthusiasm for complex technical challenges. By combining bold scale, refined detailing, and careful collaboration with the design team, Garden Lodge achieves a result that is both innovative and quietly confident.
