OVERVIEW

Natural light, openness, and precision glazing

Located in the tranquil surroundings of Rickmansworth, this contemporary extension, designed by RS Architects, redefines the relationship between home and garden. With a focus on natural light, openness, and precision glazing, the project is centred around a three-track FD20 minimal sliding door, a frameless structural glass roof, and a frameless eaves window—each working in harmony to create a seamless, modern living space.

Minimal Sliding Door

Expansive floor-to-ceiling glass

At the core of the extension is the three-track FD20 minimal sliding door, designed to blur the boundaries between inside and out. With ultra-slim sightlines and expansive floor-to-ceiling glass, this system ensures that the garden remains a constant backdrop, flooding the interior with natural light. The three-track configuration offers flexibility and wide access, allowing the doors to slide open effortlessly, creating a near-invisible threshold to the outside. Even when closed, the minimal framing preserves uninterrupted views, maintaining a strong connection with the landscape.

Structural Glass Roof

Enhance the sense of light and space

A frameless structural glass roof was introduced to further enhance the sense of light and space. Sitting seamlessly within the extension, the glass roof allows daylight to cascade from above, ensuring the space remains bright and airy throughout the day. The design eliminates the need for bulky support structures, achieving a clean, minimalist aesthetic that amplifies the openness of the extension.

Dynamic architectural feature

To optimise natural light and bring the outdoors in, a frameless eaves window was installed, creating a dynamic architectural feature. The glazing extends up the wall and seamlessly into the roof, offering uninterrupted sightlines and enhancing the sense of height and space within the room. This feature not only improves natural illumination but also frames views of the sky and landscape, reinforcing the connection between the home and its surroundings.
