Reinforcing the restaurant’s contemporary aesthetic
Set within the historic Borough Market, OMA is a restaurant designed to create an immersive and welcoming experience. Blending raw industrial materials with warm, tactile finishes, the space needed a glazing solution that would enhance light, flexibility, and connectivity while maintaining a strong architectural identity. The integration of bi-fold doors, a sliding door, a pocket door, and casement windows achieves just that—offering seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces while reinforcing the restaurant’s contemporary aesthetic.
Drawing in natural light
A defining feature of OMA’s design is the bi-fold door system, which allows the restaurant to expand and contract with ease. By fully opening the façade, the bi-fold doors create a direct connection between the interior dining space and the vibrant energy of Borough Market, drawing in natural light and enhancing the atmosphere. When closed, the slim-framed glazing maintains a sense of openness, ensuring that the relationship between inside and out is never lost.
Clever, space-saving solution
To further optimise space and maintain clean architectural lines, a pocket door was incorporated into the design. This clever, space-saving solution ensures a smooth transition between different areas of the restaurant while remaining discreet when not in use. By sliding seamlessly into the wall, the pocket door eliminates visual clutter and preserves the open, inviting feel of the space.
Enhancing ventilation and bringing in natural light
Casement windows play a crucial role in enhancing ventilation and bringing in natural light while complementing the raw yet refined material palette of OMA’s interior. Designed for ease of use and durability, these windows frame views of the bustling Borough Market environment, adding to the restaurant’s sense of openness while maintaining a controlled and comfortable dining atmosphere.
Ultra-slim sightlines
For a sleek and unobtrusive alternative to traditional openings, sliding doors provide a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Designed with ultra-slim sightlines, these doors maximise natural light and frame uninterrupted views of the market beyond. The effortless sliding mechanism allows for smooth operation, ensuring that movement between spaces feels fluid and organic. Whether fully open or closed, the sliding doors enhance the restaurant’s adaptability while maintaining a refined, minimalist aesthetic.
