UK’s Largest Skylight: A 10m Architectural Marvel Installed in Harlow
UK’s Largest Skylight
At Threshers in Harlow, innovation and precision came together to create one of the UK’s largest skylights. Spanning an incredible 10 metres by 3.2 metres and weighing 2.5 tonnes, this bespoke skylight is a bold architectural statement, flooding the space below with natural light and redefining the possibilities of structural glazing.
Engineering on a Grand Scale
The skylight’s journey began in Austria, where the glass was manufactured to exacting standards. Transported to the UK via a dedicated inloader lorry, the glass made its way to Harlow, ready for installation. The scale of the glass required an extraordinary approach to logistics and planning, exemplifying the innovation and collaboration behind the project.
Precision Installation
Installing a skylight of this size presented unique challenges. A 60-tonne crane was brought in to lift the glass from the road to an intermediary position before executing the final lift into place. The precision required at every stage—from transport to installation—highlighted the technical expertise and coordination needed to realise such a complex vision.
A Statement in Design and Functionality
The finished skylight transforms the building, introducing a flood of natural light that enhances both the functionality and aesthetic of the space. Its scale and seamless integration are a testament to the possibilities of modern glazing and bold architectural ambition.
Collaboration in Action
Projects like these remind us of the beauty that can be achieved when design, engineering, and execution align perfectly. Threshers stands as a beacon of innovation, a symbol of what can be achieved when bold ideas are brought to life.
